New meaning to Can Do- John Deere makes 300,000 ‘canned statement’ with Social Media

How many cans does it take to make a combine? Celebrating the roll-out of their new series combine, John Deere took a ‘canned’ approach. A can sculpture at the company’s Pavilion is under construction. Here is a snap from the live web-cam. The company has a number of social media focused activities around the charitable project. The sculpture is a 3-D mosaic using about 300,000 cans. After the display holds down the floor of the pavilion for a number of days the sculpture will be removed and donated to a local food pantry. John Deere feels it is a symbol of their role in American agriculture. You can visit the Can-do project Facebook page and customize your own can wrapper and participate in the event. You can watch “Behind the scene’ videos from YouTube or see the progress live from a web cam. The participants are talking about setting a new record for largest can sculpture. Check it out!

  1. I wonder who manufactures cans in this country..and if the “healthy choices” lifestyle has created shift into more frozen items than canned..

    1. Good question.
Having grown up in the canning industry, I can tell you it is alive and well. The cans themselves are produced locally or least regionally to where the crops are grown. I viisted a can manufacturer as a class field study in college.

  2. I have been in the headquarters building in Moline. The setting is beautiful – like a movie set. Inside, there is a huge collection of outstanding art. The individual office cubes and desks are generic and look uncomfortable.

This looks like a “canned” response to hunger!
